The Authority of God's Word
How Scripture Shapes the Believer's Identity and Confidence and Why Every Believer Must Grow in the Knowledge of God's Word
By Pastor Manuel
Introduction
The authority of God's Word is one of the greatest realities of the Christian faith.
It not only reveals God's character and purposes but also transforms those who receive it with faith. As believers grow in the knowledge of Scripture, they develop confidence—not in themselves, but in the God who speaks through His Word.
This reflection was inspired by a simple yet thought-provoking question someone once asked me:
"Do you think you are God?"
The question arose because of the boldness and confidence with which I spoke and acted, grounded in the truths I had discovered in Scripture.
My response was not based on personal opinion but on Christ's own words:
"How readest thou?" (Luke 10:26, KJV)
In other words, What does the Scripture say?
Why Does God Command Us to Study?
The Bible repeatedly urges believers to study, meditate on, and continually engage with God's Word.
Paul instructs Timothy:
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God..."
— 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
Why such emphasis?
Because God's Word is far more than information.
It is the revelation of God's will, His wisdom, and His purposes. Through Scripture, believers come to know God personally and understand who they are in Christ.
This is why Paul prayed for the Ephesian church:
"...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ... may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him."
— Ephesians 1:17 (KJV)
Spiritual understanding is not merely intellectual—it is revealed by the Holy Spirit.
The Word Reveals God
John begins his Gospel with one of the most profound declarations in Scripture:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
— John 1:1 (KJV)
God's Word reveals His very nature.
Through His Word we encounter His character, His truth, His promises, and His saving purpose fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Scripture is not simply a collection of religious writings—it bears witness to the living God and points ultimately to Christ Himself.
As believers continually immerse themselves in God's Word, they are transformed into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).
The Transforming Power of Scripture
God's Word carries creative and life-giving power.
It builds faith, renews the mind, sanctifies the believer, and aligns our lives with God's purposes.
Jesus prayed:
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
— John 17:17 (KJV)
The more believers meditate on Scripture, the more their thinking, attitudes, and actions are shaped by God's truth.
This produces spiritual confidence—not arrogance, but humble assurance rooted in God's promises.
"You Are Gods" — Understanding Jesus' Words
Jesus said:
"Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?"
— John 10:34 (KJV)
He continued:
"If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came..."
— John 10:35 (KJV)
In this passage, Jesus is quoting Psalm 82:6, where human judges or rulers are described as "gods" because they had been entrusted with God's authority to administer justice on His behalf.
Jesus uses this Scripture to respond to His critics, showing that Scripture itself uses this language in a representative sense.
The broader point remains significant: those entrusted with God's Word bear a serious responsibility to represent Him faithfully and live according to His truth.
Moses: God's Representative
The life of Moses illustrates this principle vividly.
God told Moses:
"...thou shalt be to him instead of God."
— Exodus 4:16 (KJV)
Later, God declared:
"See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh..."
— Exodus 7:1 (KJV)
These statements do not mean Moses became divine.
Rather, God appointed him as His authorized representative, speaking and acting under divine authority before Pharaoh and the people of Israel.
Moses' authority came entirely from God's commission and God's Word.
His effectiveness depended upon faithful obedience to God's instructions.
The Authority of God's Word in the Believer's Life
The confidence of the believer is never rooted in personal ability.
It is rooted in God's Word.
As we continually learn, meditate upon, and obey Scripture, we grow in wisdom, discernment, and spiritual authority.
God's promises strengthen our faith.
His truth shapes our identity.
His Spirit empowers us to live according to His will.
The Christian's boldness is therefore not self-confidence but confidence in Christ.
Grow in the Knowledge of God
Every opportunity to study Scripture is an opportunity to know God more deeply.
Believers should never underestimate the importance of consistent Bible study, meditation, and faithful teaching.
God's Word continues to:
Reveal His character.
Strengthen faith.
Renew the mind.
Build spiritual maturity.
Equip believers for every good work.
Guide daily decisions.
The more deeply we know God's Word, the more faithfully we can represent Him in the world.
Final Reflection
God's Word carries divine authority because it reveals the God who speaks.
As believers receive, meditate upon, and obey Scripture, they grow in wisdom, confidence, and spiritual maturity.
Like Moses, Christians are called to represent God faithfully—not in their own strength, but through humble dependence upon His Word and His Spirit.
May we continually seek the knowledge of Scripture, allowing God's truth to shape our lives until His character is reflected in everything we say and do.
For the authority of the believer is never found in self, but in the living Word of God.
Key Takeaways
God's Word reveals His character, will, and purposes.
Believers are called to study Scripture diligently and seek spiritual understanding.
Spiritual confidence comes from knowing and trusting God's Word, not from self-confidence.
Jesus' reference to "you are gods" points to those entrusted with representing God's authority, not to human divinity.
Moses exercised God's authority as His appointed representative before Pharaoh.
Scripture transforms believers by renewing their minds and strengthening their faith.
The authority of every Christian flows from faithful obedience to God's revealed Word.
