POSSESS YOUR SOUL

POSSESS YOUR SOUL

The Missing Link Between Spiritual Passion and Spiritual Stability

By Pastor Manuel

Introduction: When Prayer Becomes Heavy

Have you noticed that there are seasons when prayer feels like a burden?

Moments when worship becomes difficult, fellowship feels dry, and spending time with God appears more like an obligation than a delight?

This ought not to be the normal experience of a believer.

"You don't have to experience spiritual heaviness when it comes to prayer and fellowship."

If you no longer crave God's presence or enjoy communion with the Holy Spirit, it may be a sign that something has taken the place of the Spirit's influence in your life.

The issue may not necessarily be your spirit.

The issue may be your soul.

Understanding the Three Dimensions of Man

1 Thessalonians 5:23

"And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Man is composed of:

  • Spirit
  • Soul
  • Body

While many believers understand the spirit and the flesh, the soul often remains neglected.

The soul encompasses:

  • Personality
  • Emotions
  • Desires
  • Appetites
  • Intellect
  • Thoughts
  • Feelings

It is the seat of your individuality and earthly expression.

How Man Became a Living Soul

Genesis 2:7 (Implied)

God formed man from the dust of the earth.

Dust alone was not enough.

When God breathed His Spirit (Ruach) into man, the result was a living soul (Nephesh Chayyah).

The breath of God interacting with dust produced a living personality capable of expressing life.

Pull Quote

"Man who was then dust received the Ruach and became an activated personality — Nephesh Chayyah."

Why God Is Concerned About Your Soul

Many people focus on outward appearances.

God focuses on souls.

Proverbs 20:27

"The spirit of man [that factor in human personality which proceeds immediately from God] is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts". (AMP)

From the beginning, God made man’s spirit to function like a lamp, guiding us into the secret places of success, wholeness, peace, and steadiness. Sin severed that fellowship — the spirit “went dark.” Now the soul stands in the gap, tasked with aligning God’s will with what we think, want, and decide.

Consider these scriptures:

Matthew 16:26

"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

Matthew 10:28

"Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul."

When people gather, we count bodies.

God counts souls. The soul matters deeply to God because it determines how His purposes are manifested through our lives.

The Soul: The Battlefield of Manifestation

Your spirit relates with God in fellowship.

Your body relates with the physical world.

Your soul determines how those realities are expressed.

"God relates primarily with our soul when it comes to our earthly manifestations."

The soul can either:

  • Align with the Spirit
  • Submit to the flesh
  • Become corrupted through worldly influences

This is why believers can know the truth and still struggle to live it.

Why Some Believers Struggle Spiritually

Many Christians wonder:

  • Why am I tired when it's time to pray?
  • Why do I feel bored reading Scripture?
  • Why do I keep doing what I know is wrong?

The answer often lies in the condition of the soul.

Romans 12:2

"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Transformation happens through the renewal of the soul's faculties.

An unhealthy soul can distort spiritual perception and weaken spiritual momentum.

Possess Your Soul

Jesus gave a profound instruction:

Luke 21:19

"In your patience possess ye your souls."

Possessing your soul means gaining mastery over:

  • Thoughts
  • Emotions
  • Cravings
  • Appetites
  • Reactions
  • Desires

Many people attempt to control their behavior without addressing the soul.

But behavior is often the fruit of the soul's condition.

The Danger of an Unstable Soul

2 Peter 2:14

"Beguiling unstable souls."

An unstable soul is vulnerable.

It becomes susceptible to:

  • Temptation
  • Fear
  • Lust
  • Anxiety
  • Unbelief
  • Spiritual inconsistency

Alem Quote

"It's not the temptation that is so great and insurmountable; the instability of the soul is what drowns men into inescapable temptation."

Even highly gifted believers can fail when the soul lacks stability.

The problem is not always a lack of revelation.

Sometimes it is a lack of discipline within the soul.

The Soul and Spiritual Discipline

Consider Job's declaration:

Job 31:1

"I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust upon a young woman."

This covenant was not merely prayer.

It was discipline.

Alem Quote

"This covenant isn't a prayer mode; it's a discipline mode."

A disciplined soul supports obedience.

An unstable soul sabotages it.

The Ongoing Salvation of the Soul

1 Peter 1:9

"Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls."

While the spirit is regenerated at salvation, the soul undergoes continual transformation.

This process requires:

  • The Word of God
  • Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
  • Renewed thinking
  • Intentional discipline

A healthy soul becomes increasingly subject to the Word and the Spirit.

Guard Your Heart, Guard Your Soul

Proverbs 4:23

"Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance, for out of it flow the springs of life."

Your thoughts matter.

Your emotions matter.

Your cravings matter.

What occupies your soul eventually influences:

  • Your spirit
  • Your behavior
  • Your decisions
  • Your destiny

Pull Quote

"The way you respond to the Word and work of God is primarily sponsored by the soul, not your spirit."

A Prayer for Soul Stability

The believer's prayer should not only be for spiritual gifts or breakthroughs.

It should also be for a healthy and disciplined soul.

Pray:

  • Holy Spirit, reset my soul.
  • Help me possess my soul.
  • Grant me stability and good health.
  • Let my mind be governed by Your Word.
  • Discipline my soul to mirror Your excellence.
  • Let it be well with my soul.

Final Reflection

A healthy spiritual life requires more than spiritual experiences.

It requires a soul that is:

  • Stable
  • Disciplined
  • Renewed
  • Governed by the Spirit

Romans 8:6

"For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

The condition of your soul will determine the consistency of your walk with God.

May we cultivate Spirit-controlled souls, walk in the fear of the Lord, and love Him with all our heart and soul.

"Possess your soul now."
